David Byrne the creative genius behind new wave band Talking Heads returns to Australia and New Zealand with his new album Who Is The Sky? out September 5, 2025, via Remote Control/Matador.
The tour kicks off in Auckland on 14th January 2026 and Australia in Brisbane on 17th January see below for more dates.
David Byrne co-founded Talking Heads in the mid-1970s with fellow Rhode Island School of Design students Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, and later Jerry Harrison. The band quickly became known for their intellectual, minimalist approach to punk and new wave, combining rock with funk, African rhythms, and electronic textures.
Byrne’s distinctive voice - sharp, nervous, and expressive and his unconventional stage presence (most famously in the oversized suit in Stop Making Sense) helped set the band apart. His lyrics often tackled themes like alienation, identity, consumer culture, and technology, usually with an ironic or abstract slant.
After Talking Heads disbanded (unofficially in 1991), Byrne delved deeper into world music, visual art, film, and multimedia projects, showing his versatility and intellectual curiosity.
Highlights: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981, with Brian Eno) – Groundbreaking use of sampling and global influences.
Rei Momo (1989) – Latin American music styles.
Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008, with Eno) – Reflective, electronic folk-pop.
Love This Giant (2012, with St. Vincent) – Brass-heavy art pop.
American Utopia (2018) – Acclaimed album and Broadway show, directed by Spike Lee for HBO.
