“I woke up this morning thinking I sure hope I meet some nice Aussies who want to rock and roll with me tonight” – singer Brittany Howard
Brittany, we’d rock and roll with you anytime. Alabama Shakes’ debut record ‘Boys & Girls’ arrived like a lightning bolt last year, seducing us with its bluesy rock ‘n’ roots and Southern soul charms. It catapulted the four-piece to number eight on the US charts and earned them glowing reviews, three Grammy nominations and high-profile fans like Robert Plant and Jack White.
Witnessing them live, it’s easy to understand the appeal. Making their Australian debut, the band’s Sydney Big Day Out sideshow at the Metro was powerful, playful and gut-wrenchingly good. At the centre of it all lies Howard, a howling storm of soul and swagger, who proved as charming as she is cheeky.
The Grammys and I need to have a talk. A long hard talk.
