Royal Blood, the thunderous two-headed monster consisting of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher have returned to Australia for Groovin’ The Moo and a couple massive headline shows.
Thursday night was the first taste – and it did not disappoint.
Supported solidly by Perth’s prog-rock outfit Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and two-piece ARIA nominees Polish Club – it was a strong lineup that grabbed hold of your eardrums from the outset and never relented.
PPC kicked things off with their catchy triptastic riffery and lit the fire perfectly.
Next up, Polish Club brought a charismatic swagger and bombastic beats. They seemed to have a great time up there and the eager crowd lapped it up. The energy in the venue was building towards the inevitable firestorm…
Finally, heralded by KC and the Sunshine Band’s ‘Get Down Tonight,’ Royal Blood took to the stage and exploded into ‘Where Are You Now?’ a huge track from last year’s sophomore album, ‘How Did We Get So Dark?’
The band then went on to destroy everything in their path.
How a two-piece can sound this huge is beyond this reviewer – but whatever they’re doing – it works.
The live show is an energetic, chaotic, headbangin, crowd-surfing, chest-pounding shred-fest – circle pits, devil horns and melted faces abound – and it’s nothing short of glorious.
The large stage was narrowed down by a wall of speakers and lights – channeling and focusing the ferocity of the music which sent the crowd into delirium.
Closing out with the massive ‘Out of the Black’ – the set was pure electricity and the sweaty mob that stumbled out into the night were winded, smiling and more than satisfied with the 75 minute rock and roll sermon.
Those of you headed out to the Groovin’ The Moo shows are in for a treat. Don’t forget your earplugs! It’s going to get loud. \m/
