Peter Zaluzny Wins Big With At The Drive-In Shot

Massive congratulations to photographer Peter Zaluzny for winning the July Moshcam Photography Award for his incredible jump-shot of At The Drive-In playing at this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival. Peter’s work wins him a $100 voucher from Smile Please retro film and camera store in Newtown, Sydney.  ( 457 King St, Newtown, 0412 337 255 )

Despite being a massive fan of the band (and their millions of side projects!), this was Peter’s first time seeing and shooting the band live. He talked us through the difficult process of capturing one of frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s signature stage jumps on camera:

“Because I’d seen a bunch of live videos I kinda knew what to expect, knew the visual cues and big moments in songs. I knew Cedric jumps around a lot and so I always kept an eye on him even if I was shooting another member of the band…as he climbed onto the speaker stack and squatted down to sing to the crowd, I knew he was about to take that massive leap. I put my shutter up ridiculously high and bumped up the ISO. I prepared myself to get as sharp a photo as possible. If it’s dark, you can always save it in post, if it’s grainy, you can fix it later – just gotta make sure it’s sharp!”
