The Break - The Annandale Hotel, Sydney

THE BREAK’s album is a unique blend of pulsating psycho surf rock tunes featuring 15 mostly instrumental tracks. The bulk of the album tracks are named after legendary surf breaks. ‘Cylinders’, the first single from the album, was in fact one of the first tracks created, and will be available from iTunes Australia from Tuesday February 9th. World renowned producer Nick Launay, who of course has worked on many Midnight Oil releases and numerous other renowned acts including Silverchair, Nick Cave and PiL, took ‘Cylinders’ to the mixing desk in a Los Angeles studio to create a mix highlighting the driving guitars and a pounding back beat synonymous with both the surf rock genre and the classic Oils sound.

So how did THE BREAK come about? Despite constant speculation from fans as to what the remaining Oils would do next, it wasn’t until after the Sound Relief benefit gig in Melbourne last year that Hirst, Moginie and Rotsey finally got together in the studio with the aim of forming a new band with a new identity. The onstage magic that had been the engine room of Midnight Oil had proved a force too powerful to deny. These three Oils were burning to play together again.

Both Midnight Oil and Violent Femmes have surfing influences - The Oils began their career on Sydney's Northern Beaches in the sweat filled environs of the Narrabeen Antler whilst the Femmes, though famous for mega hits like 'Blister in the Sun', often flavoured their individual folk punk sound with surf-rock guitar. The two bands have an affinity having toured together in the States. Songwriters Hirst and Moginie who co-wrote most of Midnight Oil’s tracks had swag of ideas but wanted to cut a new twist. Bones Hillman, the Oils bass player since 1987 had moved overseas so they rang long time friend Brian Ritchie who had recently relocated to Australia and asked him to join them in the studio. Warming up by jamming on old favourites like Link Wray's 'Rumble' (Pulp Fiction) the sound coming out of their amps was already taking on an energy of its own. The synergy was instant, electrifying and THE BREAK was born.

Throwing lyrics out the window the new band has written 15 great tracks that push the boundaries within the traditional framework of the surf music genre: guitars, drums, bass, and keyboards. Each player a master in their field, they’ve found common ground in a range of obscure musical influences. The sound created is fresh, exciting and cutting edge, it’s a brilliant fusion of surf guitar rock but with a modern bend - and an unmistakable whiff of Oil.

Jim Moginie explains, “We realised that we could just be an instrumental band with vocals added occasionally and we could use surf guitars or weird sounds for the melody. I think of Mogwai, the Mermen or Decoder Ring. Instead of a lead singer those bands just rely on the power of the players and the dynamics of the music. We've found the lack of vocals opens up all sorts of possibilities in the music that we couldn't have even imagined in our wildest dreams. Getting Brian in was important because he's such a strong ensemble player and catalyst. There were shivers up the spine at our first rehearsal, the sound was just enormous."

The band consists of George Pettit (vocals), Dallas Green (guitar, piano, vocals), Wade MacNeil (guitar, vocals), Chris Steele (bass), and Jordan Hastings (drums).

They describe their music as "the sound of two Catholic high-school girls in mid-knife-fight" (a reference to their song "A Dagger Through the Heart of St. Angeles", also the inspiration for their debut album cover art).[6] When the band came out of the underground like an "utterly captivating car-accident-in-progress" in late 2001, it was enough to impress critics[6] and attain a gold certification for their self-titled debut album.

The band has released three more very successful studio albums: Watch Out! in 2004, Crisis in 2006, both which have achieved platinum certification in Canada and Old Crows/Young Cardinals in 2009.

As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its direction. NIN's music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristic sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him. The touring band features a revolving lineup that often rearranges songs to fit a live setting. After nine years in the band, Charlotte was asked to leave so that the band could once again return to a three piece. Without a second guitarist some of the material from Meltdown, Free All Angels and Nu-Clear Sounds has not since been played, while various singles and material from the albums Twilight of the Innocents and 1977 have made up the majority of material performed recently.[9] Rick, after the departure of Charlotte has taken over a lot of her backing vocal duties, whilst Mark provides backing vocals occasionally in studio, but not live. The band have stated that whilst there are no immediate plans to tour with the material written and recorded with Charlotte still in the band, "never say never", and that there was a possibility they may at some point tour with Charlotte again, in NME in June 2009 Charlotte also commented on the split stating her and Tim Wheeler were regularly talking, and that playing together again was a possibility in the future.[10]

They are often credited with starting the Swing Revival movement. The band's musical style, however, transcends the pigeon-hole label that was given to them as a swing band (most noticeable in their rendition of Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man" and originals "The Contender" and "Walking Like Brando".) RCR has had great success on The Van's Warped Tour, touring with the B-52's and Pretenders, and appearances at the major US Jazz Festivals. The band recently filmed a special episode of "Gene Simmons Family Jewels", with Gene taking the reins, to appear in March. The band was founded by Eddie Nichols, Mando Dorame, out of a love of Rockabilly, Punk, Jazz, Blues, Soul, and other styles of roots music . The Stern brothers, Mark and Adam, who hailed from the punk band Youth Brigade rounded out the group early on. After repeatedly leaving RCR to tour with Youth Brigade, the Sterns were told to leave the band in the mid-90s and it is now headed by singer Eddie Nichols, tenor saxophonist/arranger/writer Mando Dorame, trumpeter Scott Steen, and drummer Daniel Glass. Stronger than ever, the band continues to play to capacity crowds in Australia, Europe, and the US.

With their hit single “The Bleeding” pulverizing the Active rock charts and MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball, the album has been called a “Cowboys from Hell for this millennium (Outburn Magazine).” The band has already toured with the likes of Korn, Disturbed, Slipknot, Hellyeah, Trivium, and Atreyu in the short time since their album debuted in the Billboard Top 200. After recruiting a devoted die-hard fanbase (The Knuckleheads) and selling 300,000 records - the band took part in 08’s biggest North American metal event… hitting the road with Disturbed in April and joining The Metal Mayhem Festival (Slipknot, Disturbed, Machine Head, Mastodon and more) in July.... This summer audiences had the chance to see why Metal Edge calls Five Finger Death Punch “the sound of violent exhilaration, giving contemporary metal a belligerent shove in an exciting direction.” After a short break - Five Finger Death Punch was be back on the road their own headlining tour across the US and Canada selling out almost every show on the tour. Afer the succesful headlinig tour, the band begun its European run with Lamb Of God - then joined Metal Hammer's Defender Of The Faith tour (with Lamb Of God, Dimmu Borgir, Unearth) - immediatelly following it up with their own headlining tour across the continent. After 2 straight years on the road, 5FDP is back in the studio, working on their follow up record... shooting for the release date somewhere in 09 August/September

The Gaslight Anthem released their first album, Sink or Swim, on XOXO Records on May 29th, 2007. Their full-length debut was warmly received by sources ranging from independent music review sites punknews.org (Sink or Swim review, Absolutepunk.net (profile and review), and Racket Magazine (interview), to more mainstream sources like Spin.com (Band of the Day) in August 2007, UltimateGuitar.com (album review)and a feature on FuseTV's Dozen Days of Downloads in January of 2008. Their sound is recognizably New Jersey, one of the band's acknowledged heroes and influences Bruce Springsteen and their driving punk owing a great deal to the New Brunswick hardcore scene, of which the best-known exemplars are probably The Bouncing Souls and Thursday. Their influences are not limited to New Jersey or punk, however; their music pays homage to acts from Tom Waits to Wilson Pickett and Joe Strummer, the latter the subject of the track "I'da Called You Woody, Joe," the band's second single and video from Sink or Swim. There are videos for the band's first single, "Drive" as well as "I'da Called You Woody, Joe." from their debut album "Sink or Swim" as well as a video for the song "The '59 Sound" from the album "The '59 Sound". The Gaslight Anthem has been on tour throughout 2007 and continuing through 2008, supporting Against Me!, The Loved Ones, and The Draft. A follow-up EP titled Señor and the Queen via Florida's Sabot Productions was released on 06 February 2008. The Vinyl was released on standard 7" and also in limited Red (500 copies) and White (100 Copies) The band's second full-length album is due to be released in August, 2008. It will be titled "The '59 Sound". Hot Water Music's, Chris Wollard, and the Mighty, Mighty Bosstones's Dicky Barrett are guests on the album. Source: Wikipedia

They have also built a loyal following in the UK and in the United States.

After going back to his hometown of Philadelphia for a dentist appointment, Anthony Green went to the airport to return to California to work with Saosin. However, while on a layover in Phoenix, he suddenly had an epiphany - despite the fact that Saosin was close to breaking out, he knew he would be miserable if he returned. To him, Saosin was "a girl that you had great sex with, yet had little in common with." When asked about his decision to leave Saosin he stated, "I left Saosin because I hated what I was doing, I hated who I was, and basically wanted to kill myself because of it." [1]He returned to Colin Frangicetto, a friend who he had "jammed" with during his stay, and they decided to begin recording and recruiting. Thus, Circa Survive was born. Colin Frangicetto and Anthony Green, with full support from Equal Vision Records, then recruited Brendan Ekstrom. Ekstrom had been Frangicetto's bandmate in This Day Forward, which had recently disbanded. Both Ekstrom and Frangicetto had toured with Taken during their This Day Forward days, and procured Nick Beard, previous bassist of Taken, as Circa Survive's next member. The band met Steve Clifford through Vadim Taver of the band Marigold; "[Steve] jammed with us for a week and from there it was on," says Frangicetto. To date, Circa Survive has released two versions of the song "Handshakes at Sunrise," on two different 2004 sampler discs from Equal Vision Records, as well as a 2005 limited edition tour EP called The Inuit Sessions. A full length album Juturna was released on April 19, 2005, and a second On Letting Go on May 29, 2007, both on Equal Vision Records. Circa Survive now has many national tours under their belt. They toured in the winter of 2005 with My Chemical Romance and Thrice. That summer they co-headlined a tour. Circa Survive has also opened for Mae and Dredg on each of their headlining runs. Circa Survive played The Bamboozle Festival in 2005, 2006 and 2007. [1] They also played a few dates on The Vans Warped Tour in 2005. In early 2006, they took on a tour of Europe with Coheed and Cambria and Thrice, after having previously completed a tour in September 2005 with Motion City Soundtrack. They also toured with Saves The Day, Moneen, and Pistolita. In the summer of 2006, they embarked on their first headlining tour The Twilight Army Tour, with The Receiving End of Sirens, Days Away, Portugal. The Man, YouInSeries, and Keating. Then in fall of 2006, they went on tour with Thursday, Rise Against and Billy Talent. The band also played on the Rockstar Alternative Press Tour headlining with Cute Is What We Aim For, and with supporting acts As Tall As Lions and Envy on the Coast. In April 2007, Circa Survive played at the Coachella arts and music festival in Indio, California. In Summer of 2007, the band played the entire Vans Warped Tour alongside bands such as Coheed and Cambria, The Used, Anberlin, and Bad Religion. Circa Survive opened for My Chemical Romance's 2007 shows in Worcester, MA and Australian and New Zealand shows also. Circa Survive completed touring with Ours, Fear Before The March Of Flames, with Dear and the Headlights, and The Dear Hunter in November 2007. On August 28, 2006 in a live acoustic session on Steven's Untitled Rock Show on Fuse TV, Anthony and Brendan played a new song called "Miracle Sun". In April 2007 on Steven's Untitled Rock Show, it was said by Anthony Green that "Miracle Sun" would not be on Circa Survive's new album, On Letting Go.[citation needed] On November 1, 2006, after their show at the Venue of Scottsdale in Scottsdale, AZ, guitarist Colin Frangicetto was asked by one of the fans if there were any plans for a live DVD release. Frangicetto said that he was in the process of editing a lot of live footage for a possible DVD release. On November 27, 2006 the band announced via their MySpace page that they were recording a new album. Details as to its sound remained vague, although the band stated they would keep their fans posted via their website, Myspace page, Purevolume page, and YouTube page. The album was produced by Brian McTernan at Salad Days Studios in Baltimore. The band posted their album On Letting Go on their MySpace page shortly before its release. The album was officially released on May 29, 2007. The band is in the Kerrang! 2008 Tour with Madina Lake, Coheed and Cambria and Fightstar. Source: Wikipedia
