Funkoars were founded on the unique personalities of four individuals. These larger than life musicians were drawn to each other not just from a love of music, but their light hearted and jovial outlook on life.

Consisting of three MCs - Trials, Hons and Sesta - and a DJ, Reflux, they are members of Adelaide's Certified Wise Crew, a collective of Australia's greatest hip hop talent that includes the Hilltop Hoods, Cross Bred Mongrels, Terra Firma and After Hours.

It’s these personalities coupled with their prodigious talent that has brought Funkoars their success. The energetic and humorous nature of their lyrics is not something that can be emulated. While they may sometimes walk the thin line between disgusting and ludicrous, it's been this cutting edge mix that has brought their music so much attention.

With the 2003 release of their debut album Who's Your Step Daddy, promoters started approaching Funkoars to book them for live performances. On stage, just as on record, it was the personalities and heavy beats that won crowds over, It was soon became clear to the crowds that almost anything could happen at an ‘Oars gig.

After extensive touring, it was time to hit the studio again, this time to record The Greatest Hits. Contrary to its title, the 2006 album was not a compilation of their best previous work. In true Funkoars fashion, the group declared the album of all new material, start to finish, their ultimate recordings. The album was darker and lyrically heavier than the first, Funkoars now had developed a sound that was unique to the group. Everything on The Greatest Hits was big: big bass, big hooks, big wordplay. This was an album that had everything a hip hop listener wanted in an album and was widely praised throughout print and online media. Fans hailed it as one of the best hip hop albums to ever come out of Australia.

Again, Funkoars hit the road to tour the new album. By now the crowds were getting bigger and the launch tour for the album sold out many spots around the country. The Oars also toured heavily with Hilltop Hoods and were the main support on The Hard Road Tour. At Adelaide’s 2006 Big Day Out, everything came together and one of the biggest crowds to ever attend the local stage, an estimated 2000 punters, turned out for the group’s explosive performance.

This led to a one off gig in Adelaide, with a record breaking crowd turning out for the a show held to shoot live footage for a DVD. With almost 1000 people in attendance, it was one of the largest turn outs on the books for a local act in Adelaide. In late 2007, The Greatest Hits Live DVD, based around the album of the same name, found Funkoars ahead of the pack once again as only the second Australian hip hop group to commercially release a DVD, and the first pressing sold out in under a week.

In mid 2008, on the back of their electric performances, the group headed out for their biggest tour yet. The UNIfied tour took four leading artists in the urban genre, Funkoars, Bliss N Eso, Winnie Coopers and True Live to 24 universities across the country in a 2 month period, selling over 12,000 tickets. Many of the venues on the tour had given up on live music a decade ago, but the Oars took it in their stride. The feedback obtained was overwhelming, clearly showing the group had expanded their ever growing fanbase.

The Oars’ achievements extend beyond their works as group. Trials is also a prolific producer, having crafted tracks for the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Cross Bred Mongrels, Vents and most recently Drapht‘s album Brothers Grimm. Both Vents and Drapht have had massive success with their respective Trials produced singles, 'Love Song' and 'Jimmy Ricard', added to high rotation on Triple J.

Now one of the country's most sought after producers, Trials has his plate full for the immediate future with a new Vents album on the books and a side gig as a dispenser of no-nonsense advice in rhyme form in his regular column for Ralph magazine.

Not happy to rest on their past achievements or be pigeonholed by critics for their inimitable style, the Oars have evolved yet again and will bring a brand new sound to the table. The Hangover is poised to be the most talked about hip hop album from Australia in 2008, hands down.
