It's true that artists get hyped beyond belief these days, but if you're on the look out for a good show and someone steers you in the direction of Ben Harper, buy them a drink or two.
The California native is a natural born showman, a slide-guitar legend whose ability to dabble in (and pull off) everything from folk blues to country jazz and reggae has earned Harper legions of fans the world over. So when we were given the opportunity to film Ben Harper accompanied by the blues-driven Texas trio Relentless7 at the Metro in Sydney, needless to say we were a little bit excited.
A songwriter as insanely talented as Harper doesn't need any frills or fireworks to get the crowd whipped into a frenzy; a humble "thank you" from the star himself before the band broke into the raucous, bluesy opener 'Number With No Name' was all it took.
Staying in high gear, Harper and co tore through a set that featured all 11 songs from 'White Lies For Dark Times' ranging from the groove-laden funk of 'Keep It Together' to more mid-tempo ballads like 'Faithfully Remain'. And just to prove he really has the Midas touch when it comes to music, Harper also treated the crowd to an outstanding rendition of Bowie's classic 'Under Pressure'.
It may have been filmed in 2009, but this show was such a stand out favorite of ours there was no question that it was set to become one of our Classic Concerts someday. So if you missed Harper and co last time they were Down Under, do yourself a favor and get your hands on a ticket to one of his shows during his upcoming Australian acoustic tour in November.
