Amali Ward is a Sydney based soul singer/songwriter who first came to the public’s attention at just 15. After making the top 10 of Australian Idol, rather than take the route of her manufactured contemporaries, Amali insisted on writing and developing as an artist, working with established talents including RHyNo (True Live), Pip Norman (TZU), Tyrone Noonan (george) and N’Fa (1200 Techniques). 2007 saw Amali, release her independent, self-written and produced debut EP, a mixture of vintage soul/funk and a fresh pop sensibility. With preview tracks online gaining over 200,000 plays, the EP was a success with both fans and critics – with the Daily Telegraph raving “taking her time has paid off,” describing the music as “mature pop.” The EP also received Australian independent music’s highest honour, receiving a MusicOz Award, as well as success overseas with an artist award from US-owned Songwriter Universe Magazine. Amali topped off this list of achievements by achieving the 1 position on the Myspace Soul charts for several weeks. Along the way Amali has built industry credibility that no reality TV budget could buy. She is the only idol alum to be asked to play the East Coast Blues and Roots festival (which has hosted artists such as John Mayer, Joss Stone and Ben Harper) and Southern Roots festival, and sold out shows with respected artists such as True Live, The Bamboos and Bomba have established her as a force to be reckoned with on the live circuit.
